All three are meat-and-potatoes fighters, without any devil fruits or special gimmick (like zoro and sanji). The battle is not the point of the flashback; the emotions and realizations of the characters are. We see a quick montage of the whole fight, and we see how it ends, which is how it should be. I genuinely get the feeling that rocks was holding back, as much as he could. Even then it took garp and roger to give their everything to beat him. It's crazy that a character introduced so late in the story has been so memorable and impactful. Rocks d. Xebec has genuinely shot up to become one of my absolute favourite characters.

 So we get a glimpse into garp's motivations. It's not even about protecting civilians like so many people argued non-stop. It's about protecting the rank and file marines. It also gives another dimension to garp's refusal to become an admiral. As far as he knew, whatever the 'black monster' was, it had something to do with saturn, one of the gorosei. Becoming an admiral would have meant being more directly under the thumb of the gorosei. It likely wasn't just being repulsed by your everyday cd evil, but more specifically, this monstrous evil manifesting at the highest level of government, and subverting an immensely powerful man like xebec that made him keep his distance. Battle-wise, we have definite confirmation that garp has coc, as well as a reminder that this man fights at the highest echelons of power with nothing but his bare fists. Whatever else garp is, he is a physical demon. Contrast with dragon, the absolute chad, who commandeered his ship, threatened anyone not willing to help the survivors of god valley with execution, and saved presumably at least a few lives. Given that the narration keeps talking about how no one is known to have survived, we can only hope that the people kuma, garp's ship and dragon saved managed to live on without getting noticed by the world government. Kaido was shaped so strongly by his experiences here. 'violence rules all', just like he thought rocks would have wanted. He didn't know anything about why rocks turned on him; as far as he knows, it was establishing dominance or something. And he carried that false lesson with him until the end. Also, total tangent, but my god, linlin was so hot... Whitebeard walks away from the rocks pirates here, unlike most of them, who at least seem to be taking the ship for themselves, purely as a matter of convenience. Interesting that he makes no effort to fight the reversed rocks. It can't be because of cowardice or callousness; that's just not whitebeard from what we have seen. I imagine it has to be one of two things; being upset at rocks for turning on his crew like that, or holding some fragment of loyalty to rocks still that keeps him from engaging in mortal battle with the man. Maybe he trusts garp and roger to take care of rocks by themselves. And here's where stussy loses him. They have to met later though, right? Also, hi, marco's dad. I had been wondering where gloriosa went. Good to see oda didn't forget her. Rayleigh and gaban go back for roger, which makes sense. Gaban and sommers haven't directly interacted yet. So maybe they will now? Because sommers recognized, and was terrified of, gaban in elbaf in a way that seemed personal. Great ending panel there. Saturn looks suitably horrifying with the shadows making his features pop. The world government failed to bury god valley; rocks d. Xebec's will lives on. Now, back to harald and loki, I imagine.
