I'm tempted to say that during the void century, the original davy jones cursed imu via the power of the underworld (or something like that), but there's not really enough evidence to support that.

Based on oda's recent delay a couple weeks ago, I feel like 1165 is the end of god valley (if that's the chapter he was working on when he was sick and couldn't finish it by his deadline because of how incredible the art in it will be), and we still haven't seen exactly how god valley gets wiped off the map. As the split mountain at god valley is nearly identical in appearance to the sado kinzan mine in japan , we can surmise that god valley is rich in resources and is/was used for mining. 

 

Throwing in the "Energy mining" that we see on the bottom right side of the harley, I think god valley is just above the remaining pieces of the "Forbidden sun", and the fight with reversi'd rocks causes that power to detonate. Then god valley is wiped away, those with regeneration abilities (e.G. The god's knights) can live through the explosion if they're still on the island, and of course roger and garp are tough enough to make it through it too. (I'm assuming newgate, kaido, and big mom all bail--kaido being the first. Newgate especially probably doesn't have the heart to kill his captain.) For rocks' fate, one of lunapienart's recent videos suggests that garling will be the one to actually kill rocks after roger and garp weaken him enough, and it does seem pretty likely based on how things are going. That's going to make garling one of the most hated characters in all of one piece history, and what's extra annoying is that he's super strong too, unlike past trash like spandam, absalom, charlos, or orochi.
